Making the decision to add a pet to your family marks the first step in an exciting and important life change that should be preceded by ample amounts of important thought and consideration.  Once you’ve decided on which species will be the best fit for your home, it can be difficult to decide where to locate your new pet. Though there are no right or wrong answers here, it is important to make sure you are getting your new furry friend from a reputable organization or individual. The “right” choice will be the one with which you feel most comfortable.

Shelters/Rescues

Many people unfortunately purchase small pets on a whim, without any true grasp of the commitment these spectacular animals require. As a result, an unfortunate number of small pets end up in shelters and rescue organizations across the country. Though some of these animals have come from stressful, abusive, or neglectful situations, just as many are wonderful, healthy companions simply awaiting their forever home.  When it comes to finding a new furry friend, we always recommend exploring your local shelter and rescue options first.

Word-of-Mouth

When it’s time to start your search for the perfect pet, make sure to ask friends and family if they know of anyone interested in rehoming their animal(s). Regrettably, even pet parents with the very best intentions may find themselves in a scenario that requires them to rehome their animals. With a little time and research, you may find the perfect pet for your home is currently residing with someone you already know.

Reputable Breeders

If it’s important for you to know your new pet’s exact age and lineage, you may prefer to purchase through a breeder. Before buying a small herbivore from just anyone, however, it is imperative you make sure you are dealing with a reputable breeder. Ask lots of questions and make sure you see the parents and living conditions in which they are kept. If a breeder fails to meet your expectations, or if anything about the exchange makes you uncomfortable, find someone with whom you are confident.

Pet Stores

There are a number of important considerations you should make before deciding to purchase a small herbivore from a pet store. Pets that come from pet stores may be more stressed due to improper handling and being on constant display to countless curious people. If you opt to purchase your pet from a pet store, make sure they are knowledgeable about the species-specific needs of your pet of choice, and that their care, husbandry, and diet recommendations fall in line with yours.
